Welcome to Re-Union Canal Boats (Falkirk) Newsletter August 2015

Lesley and Richard have now settled into our Falkirk base at Lock 16 (car park of Union Inn, in front of Four in One). Massive thank you to our partners Scottish Canals for top workmanship and Homefront Signs for our signange. We are still turning the world purple!

We were absolutely delighted to be invited to attend this year’s annual CVS Volunteering Awards held in the Inchyra Hotel in June with a number of our volunteers being recognised for their volunteering but also for Re-Union shortlisted in the two main categories. Imagine our pride when we were awarded Runner-Up in both categories in our first year of delivering 3 new projects!! Well done to Jim Phillp, Andrew Farrell, Alan Fairbairn, Thomas Clowe, Brian Wilson and Jordan Grivas. What a fabulous occasion it was celebrating volunteering across Falkirk District.

Partnership with Job Centre Plus Group 1 We were sad to say goodbye to Group 1 but extremely proud of all that was achieved during their 12 week block. Individual outcomes have been amazing and we are delighted to still be in touch with some of the volunteers in our projects. Good luck for the future guys! Keep using that canal magic!

LOCK KEEPING IN PARTNERSHIP WITH SCOTTISH CANALS This project is well and truly established with the best group of volunteers who are improving their health and wellbeing every time they assist with boat passages up and down the lock flights from 16 to 2 or 2 to 16 or when assisting the Wooden Spoon boat trips between locks 2 and 3. The feedback has been incredible and is a true testament to the hard work all parties involved. To find out more, please contact Richard:

Partnership with Job Centre Plus Group 2 Huge welcome to all the guys in Group 2 who have settled in well and have already benefitted from developing a huge amount of transferable skills. We look forward to continuing to work with each volunteer and support their next steps. Look out for the guys in and around the canal on a Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday.

Canal Communities Health All Round
It’s great to see some new faces in our Monday project Health All Round which combines boating skills with healthy lifestyles messages such as walk leading and examining eating and activity habits as we all look to lead a healthier lifestyle and increase our sense of wellbeing.

We are taking applications for the next group running for October – get in touch with Lesley:

NEW PROJECT COMING SOON… STEPS ALONG THE CANAL in partnership with Falkirk Council’s Employment and Training Unit.

Brian joined our Canal Communities project and showed immediate leadership potential and achieved his RYA Helmsman very quickly despite barriers in his personal life and a clear lack of confidence.

As a single dad it is not easy for him to volunteer but he has thrown himself into the role of Volunteer Team Leader on our Lock Keeping project and brings along his son who has been kitted out with his own life jacket and benefits from seeing his dad hard at work and leading others.

Brian supports others and gives up as much time as he can and the benefits of supporting others and in his general health and wellbeing is clear for us all to see. Seen here sporting our new lock keeper kit! Brian can now be seen up and down the lock flights on Saturdays and Sundays.

Our volunteers were delighted to be a part of the flotilla around The Kelpies when HRH Princess Ann came to visit on 8th July. This was a unique opportunity to be a part of a significant local event and a great time was had by all.

Royal Yachting Association

Re-Union Canal Boats are an RYA Authorised Centre so we offer our volunteers RYA Crew or RYA Helmsman certifications dependant on projects. We also deliver day courses which are open to any interested party.

The Edinburgh Canal Festival, currently in its ninth year, took place on a sunny Saturday in June and boasted lots of music, food stalls, water- and land-based activities, crafts and kids’ entertainment.••

This has always been a great family day out and the highlight of the festival was the much anticipated Raft Race, which encouraged participants to show off their boat building skills and paddling prowess. With prizes for the fanciest float, fastest paddler, most entertaining float and most eco-friendly float, quite a few laughs were shared as the races took place throughout the day.

Revellers were also kept entertained on the day by a selection of local performers, free boat trips aboard the Lochrin Belle and a variety of market stalls, food stalls and local community information points.

The Canal Fest is organised by Re-Union and brings thousands of people to the canal side every year with an estimated 4000 attending this year’s festival. It is a great showcase for the Union Canal and for Re-Union and we would like to thank everyone involved for all their hard work that made the event such a success.

We have Jaggy Thistle available for Day Hire from the Falkirk Wheel and Lochrin Belle who lives at Edinburgh Quay.
